SUMMER SCHOOL JULY 2021

ONLINE SUMMER SCHOOL ON INTRODUCTION TO DATA SCIENCE

5th JULY – 9thJULY 2021

Summer School 2021 Brochure

During the past decade, the world has experienced a massive rise in the accessibility of data related to economics, finance, life sciences, meteorological sciences, pure sciences and other allied fields matched with exponential boom in unprecedented computational power available in the hands of billions. These developments have placed us in a web of data driven world with extensive data analysis being employed for complex tasks such as algorithmic trading or gene sequencing to simple applications including purchase decisions made by consumers on e-commerce websites. As a result, we have a wide variety of data analysis software available that cater to students, researchers, professional data analysts, enterprises and so on. The Summer School hosted by the Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics, Mumbai in its current edition comprises of two courses. These courses are aimed towards equipping the students and researchers with the nuances of using some of the most popular software and tools that are commonly available and widely used in academics.

  • What can be done with such a large amount of data?
  • How do we take our first step into the world of Data Sciences?
  • How do we clean, sort and filter our data for efficient analysis?
  • Can we analyse this large array of data with simple and readily available software tools in our hand?
  • How can I make my study (dissertation, projects etc.) more effective with adequate statistical and analytical tools and analyse in a shorter duration of time?

If these and many such questions intrigue you, come and find answers at our ONLINE SUMMER SCHOOL 2021.

SARLA ANIL MODI SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS OFFERS A FIVE DAYS INTENSIVE SUMMER SCHOOL FOR:

  • Students who are currently enrolled or passed Class 12th.
  • Undergraduates and Post-Graduates.
  • Researchers pursuing M.Phil./Ph.D.
  • Freelance researchers.
  • Professionals who wish to get started with data sciences.

Drawing on the expertise of its faculty in the field of Statistics, Econometrics and related areas the Summer School will provide the participants a multidimensional approach to software based learning in the following courses

Course I: Fun with Data using MS-Excel and SPSS

Course II: Quantitative Methods Using RStudio

Course I: Fun with Data using Excel and SPSS

Microsoft Excel has been one of the most impactful and popular data analysis desktop applications on the market today. Excel spreadsheet offers us with a plethora of functions and options to analyse data. SPSS is robust statistical software used by making researchers or a large scale for data analysis. SPSS also largely helps in analysing large chunk of data into simplified tables at one click. This course is an introductory course on data analysis of real data using Excel and SPSS. It is targeted towards students of Undergraduate, researchers or individuals keen at learning more on data analysis in the field of Economics, Management, Commerce and allied fields who are planning to take their first step towards data analysis in their academic and research needs. Both Excel and SPSS have wide applications in every field of study and are useful to individuals for their future work prospect, internships, data analysis for dissertation and can be used by individuals of any courses in their further study. The sessions conducted will be a blended learning of theoretical concepts first and then moving ahead with data analysis using Excel and SPSS.

Eligibility: 12th enrolled or passed out students, Undergraduates, Post-graduates, Researchers and Professionals.

Pre-requisites: Individuals should possess basic knowledge of Statistics including Measures of Central Tendency, Dispersion, Correlation, Regression Analysis, Matrix Algebra and Linear Programming Problems.

Duration: Two session of 1.5 hours between 09:30 AM to 11:00 AM & 11:30 AM to 01:00 PM on all 5 days. Total 15 hours.

Course II: Quantitative Methods Using RStudio

Among the software most commonly used for data analysis, the demand for open source software that are freely available and can easily be customised is the most. In this list R implemented through its IDE RStudio holds a prominent place especially among the academic researchers. This course is an introductory course on quantitative analysis using R taught via its IDE RStudio. It is targeted towards students of undergraduate, post Graduate programmes and researchers in the field of economics, management, commerce and allied areas who are planning to take their first step towards using R for their academic and research needs. This course does not require any preliminary knowledge of R or any other data analysis software or programming language. These sessions will be a mix of discussing theoretical concepts and practical applications using relevant data on RStudio with stress on the latter.

Eligibility: Undergraduates, Post-graduates, Researchers and Professionals.

Pre-requisites: Understanding of Intermediate Statistics including probability distribution and hypothesis tests, Basic Econometrics and violation of assumptions of the Classical Linear Regression Model (CLRM).

Duration: Two session of 1.5 hours between 02:30 PM to 04:00 PM & 04:30 PM to 06:00 PM on all 5 days. Total 15 hours.

Instructor: Dr. Hersch Sahay, Assistant Professor, Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics, NMIMS, Mumbai.
