Theme: Economic Transitions and Policy Challenges in a Changing World
The 9th Annual Economics Conference was successfully hosted by the Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics, SVKM’s NMIMS Mumbai, on 13th April 2026. The conference served as a vibrant platform for academic researchers, policymakers, industry practitioners, and development professionals to engage in evidence-based discussions on contemporary macroeconomic issues. Centered on the theme "Economic Transitions and Policy Challenges in a Changing World," the event explored how the global economy is being reshaped by technological changes, climate imperatives, demographic shifts, and geopolitical realignments, with a specific focus on the challenges emerging economies like India face in sustaining growth and macroeconomic stability.
The intellectual proceedings commenced with a Keynote Address by Ms. Ranjani Sinha, Chief Economist at CareEdge Group, who spoke on ‘Shaping India’s Future Amidst Global Economic Shifts’. This was immediately followed by a Conference Talk by Prof. Udaya S Mishra, Professor and Head of the Department of Bio-Statistics and Epidemiology at the International Institute of Population Studies, Mumbai, who presented insights on the ‘Middle class and neo middle class dynamics of India’.
The day’s proceedings included parallel academic presentations and a dedicated Research Colloquium tailored for undergraduate, postgraduate, and first-year Ph.D. economics students.
The session also recognized outstanding research presented during the event. The Best Paper Award for the conference went to Dr. Hemangi Kiran Kelkar for her research work on "Deconstructing India’s Multidimensional Poverty Index- Investigating the Role of Infrastructure and Public Services on Poverty Outcomes".
