Annual Economics Conference
The Second Annual Economics Conference organized by Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics-NMIMS (Mumbai) in collaboration with The Indian Econometric Society was held on 12th February, 2018. This conference provided a platform for research scholars and faculty members from various eminent institutions across the country to deliberate on empirical findings, advances in economic theory and policy implications related to role of financial technology in the economy, issue of non-performing assets in large public sector banks, exchange rate dynamics and other such relevant issues related to emerging market economies.
The inaugural session was held at Juhu Jagruti Hall from 9.30 AM to 11.30 AM. Welcome address was delivered by Dr. Sharad Mhaiskar, Pro Vice Chancellor, NMIMS and Dr Rajan Saxena, Vice Chancellor, NMIMS officially inaugurated the conference. The keynote speech on ‘aspects of policy modeling’ was delivered by Mr. Ashish Kumar Chauhan, MD & CEO of Bombay Stock Exchange. The conference talk on the subject ‘on the appetite for official reserves’ was delivered by Dr. M. Ramachandran, Professor, Pondicherry Central University and Vice-President, The Indian Econometric Society. The inaugural session was closed with a vote of thanks by Prof.Amita Vaidya, Dean, Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics-NMIMS.
The pre-lunch technical session was started at 11.45 AM. Three papers, namely ‘Explaining Financial Globalization to South Asia: The Role of Governance by Dr. Dinesh Kumar Nayak (NIPFP), ‘Demonetization and non-cash payment modes’ by Mr.Kiran Limaye (NMIMS), ‘Developing an Early Warning System for Currency Crises in BRICS’ by Mr. Balaga Mohana Rao (IIT-Mumbai) were orally presented followed by brief presentations by the concerned discussants. All the presentations were chaired by Dr. M.Ramachandran. The session was closed at 1.15 PM.
The post-lunch technical session was started at 1.15 PM. Out of three papers, two papers namely ‘Relation between Bank Ownership and Bank Performance : Evidence from the Indian Banking Sector’ by Dr.Lalitagauri Kulkarni & Ms.Shefali Pardeshi (GIPE) and ‘Asymmetric Exchange Rates and Unofficial Exchange Rate Interventions: Evidence from India’ by Dr.Suni Paul( MSE)& Dr. Anand.B (NMIMS) were orally presented and ‘Demystifying the association among Carbon emissions, Country Development & Qualitative Factors: A Novel Approach’ by Megha Jain & Aishwarya Nagpal (FMS-DU) was presented through Skype. All the sessions were chaired by Prof. M.Ramachandran. The technical sessions came to an end at 3 PM. After the technical session, the session chair Prof.M.Ramachandran had addressed the gathering and delivered a brief lecture on ‘the conduct of research’, the session chair had also announced the best paper award. Mr. Balaga Mohana Rao from Department of HSS, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has won the best paper award along with a cash prize of Rupees 7000.
