  • Versova Beach Clean-up Drive

Several coastal areas around Mumbai have over the years become garbage dumps. This is a consequence of our derelict attitude towards the preservation of nature. In an effort to correct this attitude, SAMVEDANA, the social service club of SVKM’s NMIMS Sarla Anil Modi School Of Economics organised a clean-up drive at Versova beach on Sunday, 30th September 2018 under the Swachhta hi Seva (SHS) 2018 Jan Andolan. This was done in coordination with the regular cleanings spearheaded by Afroz Shah, an eminent Environmental organiser, under the NGO "Ek Earth” 27 Volunteers from Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics volunteered on Sunday morning to take part in the beach clean-up that lasted approximately 2 hours. The focus was on the last stretch of Versova beach, which was in a dilapidated state and was far worse in comparison to the rest of the beach. There were plastic bags, nylon sacks, clothes and other hazardous items in the soil. Taking out one bag would only leave you to notice several many further in the sand. Members worked tirelessly the entire time to pick up as much garbage as possible. The results were very satisfactory, with the beach looking visibly better than before, and the volunteers tired but happy with a hard days work. We thank Afroz Shah and Ek Earth for being such beacons of environmental and social welfare, and look forward to doing as much as possible to help achieve a cleaner and greener India.
